Vin D pulled straight off the trailer from Arizona after winning the Blue Collar class race, but there was one problem. Nobody knew how much power this thing was actually making. Right before the event, the team swapped from a 67-9 turbo to a 62-9 to get faster spool, and threw a 52 jet of nitrous at it on top of that. This dyno session was the first time any of it got measured.
The first pull answered that question the hard way. The truck reached 571 horsepower before it ripped the guts out of the flex plate, straight off the trailer, first strap. The SFI stamped unit had been beaten hard for six years and apparently had enough. The team yanked the old flex plate, installed a Power Driven billet unit rated to 1000 horsepower, and strapped it back down.
With the new hardware in place, the real testing started. Fuel only runs came in around 610 horsepower, exactly what the 62-9 was doing without any spray. The 52 jet nitrous pulls added around 262 horsepower on top of that, but chasing consistent numbers turned into its own project. Bottle pressure dropping throughout the session caused runs to fade, and a spike that looked promising turned out to be a switch issue. With a fresh bottle and everything working right, the truck settled in around 760 to 780 horsepower on nitrous.
The 62-9 turbo proved it belongs in this application. It makes similar power to the 67-9 it replaced, but gets there faster, and when you are racing, spool is everything. The team also threw more fuel at it than Vin D ran in Arizona just to see if there was more on the table. There is.
