We Put 500 Horsepower VP44 to the ULTIMATE Tow Test!

We finally put Willard to the ultimate test! After hitting our 500hp goal on the dyno, it's time to see how this VP44 Cummins handles nearly 20,000 pounds up one of the steepest hills in Southern Utah. In this video, we tackle Blackridge, a 6% grade that's a couple miles long, with multiple runs at different power levels and speeds. The results? Absolutely mind-blowing for a VP44 platform that usually gets no respect in the Cummins world. THE SETUP: Total weight: 19,420 lbs (truck + trailer) Hill: Blackridge, Southern Utah (6% grade) Truck: '54 truck with 47 RV transmission Power: 500hp VP44 Cummins Upgrades: Intake, exhaust, tuning, prototype power jets We start by weighing the whole setup so you know exactly what we're working with. Then we hit Blackridge with multiple runs testing different power levels and speeds. We run it at 80mph (because that's our speed limit here in Utah), then we do another run for all you guys who can only tow at 65mph where you live. We wanted to make sure this test covers what YOU need to know. Last time we towed this route, we were in gears two and three, had to downshift twice, and were basically floored for 20 minutes straight with EGTs around 1250°F. This time? Completely different story. The VP44 platform gets overlooked all the time because it's not the P-pump or 12-valve powerhouse everyone talks about. But when you dial in a VP44 right with the proper setup, it's an absolute monster. This truck proves that a 500 horsepower VP44 in a 98.5 to 2002 Dodge can absolutely dominate as a tow rig. The parts list on this build is surprisingly short, and it operates incredibly well. Between the turbo setup, the tuning, and the upgraded intake and exhaust, this thing just works. The EGT control is phenomenal, boost is right where it needs to be, and the power delivery is smooth and consistent. If you're running a VP44 truck or thinking about building one, this video shows you exactly what's possible. Whether you're towing a camper, a race trailer, or anything heavy, a properly built VP44 Cummins is more than up to the task.
