SEMA didn’t go our way, so we brought the Junker Drag Truck back for a real dyno run and let the numbers do the talking. No show smoke, just a 95’ 12 valve Cummins on compounds and a plan to make it better.
We rebuilt the setup with an Aggressor 98 for the atmosphere over a 62-9 manifold charger, cleaned up the second gen drop in layout with V band connections, and added both an internal gate and an external screamer gate so we could actually control the curve. Same fuel that once made about 960 to baseline, then step in and see what the changes did. The story is simple. Wastegate tuning decides how a compound turbo setup feels.
Early crack in the internal gate flattens boost and leaves power on the table. A couple turns on the turbo tuner raises opening pressure, sharpens spool, and cleans up the hit. Interstage water injection looks cool on paper but here it is more of a reliability move than a power adder, worth maybe twenty horsepower while keeping temps happy for burnout abuse. Best pull lands 1177 horsepower at roughly 107 pounds of boost, and the truck still acts like a street piece. That is the kind of diesel performance we care about. This is straight shop talk from Power Driven Diesel with the data to back it up.
You will see how compound turbos respond when you balance internal and external gates, why the sweet spot lives around 102 pounds of boost with some gate, how much fuel the setup will carry clean, and how starting the pull later keeps a stock rod engine alive. We also walk through what failed at SEMA, what got fixed, and why the updated layout makes servicing and piping easier. It is the same truck, just smarter, and it ends with a burnout because that is how a trial day should wrap.
