We are back in the shop working on Willard, our 2001 Dodge Cummins 24 valve with the VP44 injection pump. If you have been following along with this build you know the goal is simple. We want to turn this old work truck into a 500 horsepower rig without overcomplicating things. Last time on the dyno we were able to make 375 horsepower after tuning and some turbo changes. That was a solid step forward but we knew right away the next piece of the puzzle had to be bigger injectors. In this video we roll up our sleeves and show exactly how to install a new set of injectors in a VP44 Cummins and what you can expect along the way.
This is a straightforward install but like any diesel project there are little details that make the difference between an easy day and a headache. We go step by step on removing the old injectors, preparing the new ones, and getting everything tightened back down so the truck runs right. We even talk through which lines to crack for bleeding air, and why sometimes doing the easy ones first just makes life simpler when you are working in tight spots. If you have ever thought about upgrading injectors on your own truck, this video is a good look at what the job really takes with real tools in a real shop.
While we are at it we also share a quick tip that every diesel guy has probably wanted at some point. Nothing is worse than a belt that will not stop squeaking. We show a little trick with RTV that will quiet it down and make the truck sound right again. It is a simple fix but one of those things you pick up after spending time around these trucks.
This build series is about more than just numbers on a dyno sheet. It is about showing how a VP44 Cummins responds to common upgrades like turbos, tuning, and now injectors. Plenty of guys talk about what works and what doesn’t, but we want to actually bolt the parts on, run the dyno pulls, and share the results. By the time we are done we will know what it really takes to make 500 horsepower with a VP44 truck and what kind of street manners you can expect. If you own a 24 valve Cummins or just like watching old Dodges get pushed harder than stock, this video is one you will not want to miss.
