In this video we’re diving into a part of engine building that most guys never have to mess with but is absolutely critical when you are pushing the limits of horsepower. We are setting the intake centerline on our camshaft which is often called decreeing your cam. This is a step you usually skip because most cams and gears come pre-set from the factory but when you are chasing 1750 to 2000 horsepower like we are you have to take full control of your cam timing to make sure everything is spot on.
We take you step by step through the process starting with how to find the true top dead center using a dial indicator and a degree wheel. You will see us work through the method of going before and after TDC and splitting the difference which gives you an accurate way to dial in your timing. From there we install our adjustable cam gear and begin locking in the exact intake centerline we want for this build.
Throughout the video we explain what intake centerline means, how it affects engine performance and why it is such an important variable when tuning a high performance diesel. We talk about how advancing or retarding the cam can change the power curve and how even being off by one or two degrees can cause issues especially with valve clearance. There are also some good real world tips including a simple trick using a piece of tape to help stabilize the pushrod during measurements.
This build features a Hamilton Competition block which brings some extra beef to the table with thicker deck surfaces, stronger webbing and added material all around. It is not the easiest block to work with and requires some custom machining but the strength it brings makes it worth the effort for anyone serious about high horsepower diesel builds.
If you are someone who likes to understand what is happening inside your engine and how the pieces all come together for maximum power this is a video you will not want to miss. Whether you are just learning or already have your hands deep in a build there is something here for everyone. Be sure to subscribe to the channel, share this with your buddies and stay tuned for more as we get closer to firing up this monster of a Cummins.
