We’re kicking off the 2025 race season at the Desert Sun Nationals in Phoenix, Arizona, and this weekend had everything you could ask for—diesel drag racing, turbo carnage, transmission failures, last-minute fixes, and a full-on Australian-style burnout contest. The Power Driven Diesel crew showed up in force with four trucks: Uncle Rico, the Junker, the Cummins Kart, and Maya’s brand-new burnout truck. Each one brought their own brand of chaos to Firebird Raceway.
Uncle Rico, our notoriously unreliable 12-valve, pulled off a personal best and brought home the win in the 590 index class, even if it meant coasting through the finals. The Junker drag truck ran in two different classes with both Griff and Maya behind the wheel. We battled transmission slips, swapped turbos between rounds, and somehow kept the wheels turning. Maya took the win in the Pro Burnout Class with her freshly finished 4WD burnout rig, and we closed out the weekend with tire smoke, broken belts, and an absolutely fired-up crowd.
This video captures the highs, the breakdowns, the near misses, and the big wins from an action-packed weekend at one of the wildest diesel events in the Southwest. Whether you’re here for the racing, the wrenching, or the burnouts, this is what diesel performance is all about.
Next stop: Tulsa, Oklahoma on May 17th. Bring your burnout rigs, race trucks, and support the diesel community. We’ll see you at the track.
