In this video, we're diving deep into one of the most misunderstood aspects of diesel performance: fuel injection timing. After you guys requested this testing in the comments, we strapped our shop truck to the dyno and ran it through the wringer to show you the REAL impact timing has on horsepower, fuel economy, and EGT.
Here's what makes this test legit: we kept everything else locked down. Same fuel quantity, same fuel pressure, same everything, we ONLY changed the timing. This isn't some butt-dyno guessing game; this is hard data showing you exactly what happens when you optimize when that diesel hits the cylinder.
The results are wild. We started with factory-style timing (25% split, basically what you'd get rolling off the dealer lot) making 175 horsepower. Then we systematically increased the timing split all the way up to 150% to find the sweet spot. Our best run at 125% split made 218 horsepower, that's a 43 horsepower gain from timing alone, burning the exact same amount of fuel.
But here's where it gets even better for you guys towing: at 2400 RPM (where you're actually living when pulling a trailer), we saw a 55-degree drop in EGT and 22 more horsepower. You're climbing grades faster, keeping temps under control, and doing it all while getting better fuel economy. That's the trifecta right there.
