In this visit to the Parts Bin, we’re excited to tell you about a brand new product from Steed Speed Manifolds: The all-new Steed Speed 3000 manifold.
Developing the Steed Speed 3000 Manifold
During COVID, we were doing a lot of product testing on our flow bench. We were testing manifold flow and whether or not a manifold helped or hurt the flow of the head. We found very quickly that a stock manifold killed flow (see some of our manifold testing videos here). DO NOT put a ported head on your Cummins with the stock manifold.
We started mapping out the different flows of different manifolds and quickly found that the Steed Speed’s competition manifold would actually pick up flow over the head being not loaded up. Essentially, if the head is just blowing air into the atmosphere with no manifold at all, it would flow a certain amount of CFM and when we put the Steed Speed competition manifold on, it would improve over no manifold at all. Until we got to our big competition heads, pushing around 300cfm. At that size the competition manifold became the bottle neck. So we actually called up Leen, the owner of Steed Speed, and asked if they had any larger manifolds. He said “No, what would you want anything bigger for?” We explained the story up until now. That the competition manifold has enhanced all of our ported heads until our big ones. Leen’s response was “Well, I designed that manifold back when trucks were around 1,500 horsepower.” When I told him that we did 2,700hp through it, he replied that it really wasnt designed for that much power. He was going to give it some thought and get back to us.
Getting and Testing the New Manifold
Fast forward six or eight months, Leen reaches out and says he’s got a new manifold he’s sending us. What lands on our doorstep is this beautiful bad boy of a manifold and Leen says its awesome. We installed this in place of the old manifold that was preventing flow and quickly found that our head flows more with this manifold than it does without. This new Steed Speed 3000 manifold actually enhances big, big heads. This is designed for those chasing mega horsepower, sled pullers, drag racers, and competition dyno builds.Steed Speed 3000 Manifold Features
At its core, this manifold is a similar design to other Steed Speed manifolds, but is much thicker, especially in side-by-side comparisons. Measuring the two, we see the first is right around two inches thick, while the new 3000 model is two and five eighths. To add this extra width, the manifold gets wider as it moves away from the ports. It also has a slightly thinner wall and is actually lighter than the competition manifold. It also will include six individual EGT ports to assist in data logging.
